The development of tungsten and molybdenum
Release time:2019-06-15
Tungsten is an irreplaceable basic material and strategic resource for the national economy and modern national defense. Tungsten carbide has ultra-high hardness and excellent wear resistance, used for manufacturing various tools, cutters, drill bits, and wear-resistant components known as 'industrial teeth.' Molybdenum is mainly used in the steel industry, with most industrial molybdenum being directly used for steelmaking or cast iron after pressing, while a small portion is smelted into ferromolybdenum for steelmaking.
Data shows that the total proven reserves of tungsten in the world are only 2.9 million tons, distributed across China, Canada, Russia, and the United States. These four countries account for as much as 84%. China has rich tungsten resources and is one of the countries with proven tungsten mineral resources. This proportion is about 60%, ranking first in the world. China's tungsten ore resources are very abundant with various types of deposits; however, the industry is disordered, product quality is low, and there is serious homogenization. Despite years of mining order rectification, there are still serious over-extraction issues in China's tungsten mines. In that month, China's tungsten concentrate output reached 120,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 14.06%.
Global molybdenum ore reserves are approximately 8.6 million tons, with global molybdenum resources distributed extremely unevenly, mainly found in China, the United States, and Chile where reserves exceed 1.1 million tons. In 2010, global molybdenum production totaled 214 thousand tons, an increase of 12.8%. China ranks first in molybdenum production worldwide; in 2010 it accounted for 37.4% of global molybdenum output. From January to November 2011, China's molybdenum concentrate output reached 216 thousand tons, a year-on-year increase of 10.99%.
In 2010, the non-ferrous metal industry earnestly implemented various policies from the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the State Council while actively carrying out the 'Adjustment and Revitalization Plan for Non-Ferrous Metal Industry.' The production and sales of tungsten-molybdenum smelting industry gradually consolidated and improved to achieve stable and rapid growth. From the operational status of 22 enterprises observed in that year, China's tungsten-molybdenum smelting enterprises showed good development momentum with relatively high profitability levels within the industry. With rapid development in downstream industries related to tungsten-molybdenum smelting products' demand will continue to increase; thus prospects for industry development remain positive.
